幽默翻译对译者来说,是莫大的挑战,这已经是众人皆知的事实。早古罗马时期,西塞罗就指出,与言语形态有关的幽默不可译。直到两千多年后的今天,学者们还在对幽默翻译的相关问题进行激烈的探讨,主要关于文学作品中的幽默翻译和影视剧中的幽默翻译。 在幽默翻译研究的初期,学者们主要是围绕幽默翻译的可译与不可译性展开探讨。美国幽默研究学者d.nilson认为幽默是可译的,而法国学者r. diot则认为翻译幽默和翻译诗歌是让译者无比头疼的事。anne- marie laurian认为在同一语言中人们有时在理解幽默时都会遇到障碍,更何况是在跨语言的情况下,翻译幽默是一个妥协的过程,需要译者付出努力,想象力和创造力(胡兴波,2012)。而在我国国内,许多学者也感叹过译事之难。早在1992年,毛荣贵在其文章《英语幽默语言汉译漫谈》中就提到幽默翻译的可译与不可译,他指出不牵涉表达技巧的情景式幽默比较容易翻译,而在非情景幽默中存在着译事三难。首先是假借英语单词“音”、“形”
