美丽的微笑

A Smile is A Gift That Anyone Can Give It costs nothing, but saves much. It eiches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give. It happens in a flash, and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None is so rich that he can get along without it; none so poor that he is not eiched by it. It creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in business, and is the countersign of friends. It is rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged, sunshine to the sick, and nature's best antidote for trouble. It cannot be bought, borrowed, or stolen, for it is no earthly good to anyone until it is given away. If you meet someone too burdened with grief or worry to smile, just give him one of yours. For nobody needs a smile so much as he who has none left to give.

青春

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust. Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite for what's next in the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young. When the aerials are down,

and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.

青春不是年华，而是心境；青春不是桃面、丹唇、柔膝，而是深沉的意志，恢宏的想象，炙热的恋情；青春是生命的深泉在涌流。 青春气贯长虹，勇锐盖过怯弱，进取压倒苟安。如此锐气，二十后生而有之，六旬男子则更多见。年岁有加，并非垂老，理想丢弃，方堕暮年。 岁月悠悠，衰微只及肌肤；热忱抛却，颓废必致灵魂。忧烦，惶恐，丧失自信，定使心灵扭曲，意气如灰。 无论年届花甲，拟或二八芳龄，心中皆有生命之欢乐，奇迹之诱惑，孩童般天真久盛不衰。人人心中皆有一台天线，只要你从天上人间接受美好、希望、欢乐、勇气和力量的信号，你就青春永驻，风华常存。 一旦天线下降，锐气便被冰雪覆盖，玩世不恭、自暴自弃油然而生，即使年方二十，实已垂垂老矣；然则只要树起天线，捕捉乐观信号，你就有望在八十高龄告别尘寰时仍觉年轻。

信心成就一切

Nothing succeeds lacks confidence. When you are truly and justifiably confident, it radiates from you like sunlight, and attracts success to you like a magnet. It's important to believe in yourself. Believe that you can do it under any circumstances, because if you believe you can, then you really will.The belief keeps you searching for answers, which means that pretty soon you will get them. Confidence is more than an attitude. It

comes from knowing exactly where you are going and exactly how you are going to get there. It comes from acting with integrity and confidence. It comes from a strong sense of purpose. It comes from a strong commitment to take responsibility, rather than just letting life happen. One way to develop self-confidence is to do the thing you fear and to get a record of successful experiences behind you. Confidence is compassionate and understanding. It is not arrogant. Arrogance is born out of fear and insecurity, while confidence comes from strength and integrity. Confidence is not just believing you can do it. Confidence is knowing you can do it.Know that you are capable of accomplishing anything you want,and live your life with confidence. Anything can be achieved through focused, determined effort and self-confidence. If your life is not what you want it to be,you have the power to change it,and you must make the changes on a moment by moment basis. Live your priorities. Live with your goals and your plan of action. Live each moment with your priorities in mind. Act with your own purpose, and you will have the life you want.

英语美文赏析

英语美文，即使用地道、优美的英语语言写的文章；英语美文赏析，则是在接触地道英语语言的基础之上，了解和理解英语语言文化背景，欣赏语言确切应用所表达的真实情景，甚至对其传达的情绪情感感同身受，以致对更深层的思想传达了解并分享。

我的美文赏析始于2003年，源于几百篇美国中学生优秀作文的翻译。3个月的翻译工作，对于已经有20年专业英语学习和近十年英语教学的我都受益良多。地道的英语语言，真实的生活场景，生动自然的生活、情感和思绪，一些我们熟识却总能让你眼前一亮的小词、小句给了我最初开设美文赏析课的想法。浸润在地道的英语语言文化中，欣赏貌似简单却画面感极强（simple but powerful）的小词小句，感受简单平易的意思之下表达的或栩栩如生的画面，或真实动人的情感，或本该讳莫如深却清晰可触的思想；而在这不断的学习中慢慢积累起来的东西，正是包括我和我的学生们这些英语学习者最终使用所迫切需要的。

浸润

语言的学习，首先要保证一定的语言输入（take in），由每天的接触和积累慢慢养成语言的感觉和习惯；而美文的阅读和欣赏，又给予学生高质量的语言。一样的语言输入，不一样品质的语言输入自然效果会有不同。比如“Home Sweet Home”，描述了要搬离居住12年的家，字里行间流露出的依恋和不舍；“The Beauty of the Beast”，小作者在回家路上偶遇一只不愿离弃被车撞身亡的同伴的小松鼠，真切体会到这只小动物身上的兽性之美，从而引发的对于人性的思考，而导致学生们对自己身上人性的剖析，并给了学生们“有心观世界，点滴皆故事”的启迪；“I Call Myself”， 通过一个妈妈在给孩子描述白种人，黄种人和黑人时表现出的细微的态度差别，包括使用的不同词汇，描述了在美国真实存在的种族歧视。这在美国黑人总统Obama当政的今天，给了学生们不小的震撼，也加强了他们对于美国种族差异的了解和认识。典型生动的细节，简单温暖的文字，真实动人的情感，总让学生们在读完以后感动沉思。我想，这就是语言的力量，这就是语言值得我们用心欣赏的原因——了解生活，感受美丽，触动心灵。每天浸润其中，怎会没有收益？

欣赏

出于语言学习的目的，在美文阅读中我指导学生欣赏的，首先是用于表达的字、词、句。对于词，我有一句名言“simple but powerful”，所有的词汇，都要在合适的情境中才能表现出触动人心的力量 （situational words）。学生渐渐领悟——词汇的使用，并不是越难越大越好，而是要针对情景；无论多小多简单的词汇，只要使用恰当，就都会具有打动人心的力量——比如，在读到The young squirrel once more stands erect and with piercing emptiness in his coal black eyes， faces me时，正是 “此时无声胜有声”的感受——痛到深处无言表。

When times become difficult (and you know they sometimes will), remember a moment in your life that was filled with joy and happiness.

当你身陷困境的时候(你有时会)，回想你生命中快乐和幸福的时刻。

Remember how it made you feel, and you will have the strength you need to get through any trial.

回想它是如何使你快乐，你便有了走出困境的勇气。

When life throws you one more obstacle than you think you can handle, remember something you achieved through perseverance and by struggling to the end.当面对重重困难，你感觉举步维艰的时候，回想你以前是如何坚持到底战胜困难的最后时刻的。

In doing so, you'll find you have the ability to overcome each obstacle brought your way.

这样，你就会发现你有能力克服每个障碍。

When you find yourself drained and depleted of energy, remember to find a place of sanctuary and rest.

当你觉得精疲力尽的时候，暂时离开，让自己稍作休息。

Take the neccessary time in your own life to dream your dreams and renew your energy, so you'll be ready to face each new day.

给自己留点时间做做梦，充一下电，这样你就能以崭新的面貌去面对每一天。

When you feel tension building, find something fun to do. You'll find that the stress you feel will dissipate and your thoughts will become clearer.

当你感觉到紧张的压力，做一些有乐趣的事吧。你会发现压力在渐渐消逝，你的想法也渐渐明朗了。

When you're faced with so many negative and draining situations, realize how minuscule problems will seem when you view your life as a whole--and remember the positive things.

当你面对重重困难的时候，要意识到相对于你的整个生命，这些难题其实是微不足道的--铭记你生命中美好的东西。
