It is not my contention that chemical insecticides must never be used[1]. I do contend that we have put poisonous and biologically potent chemicals indiscriminately into the hands of persons largely or wholly ignorant of their potentials for harm[2]. We have subjected enormous numbers of people to contact with these poisons, without their consent and often without their knowledge[3]. If the Bill of Rights contains no guarantee that a citizen shall be secure against lethal poisons distributed either by private individuals or by public officials, it is surely only because our forefathers, despite their considerable wisdom and foresight, could conceive of no such problem[4].

I contend, furthermore, that we have allowed these chemicals to be used with little or no advance investigation of their effect on soil, water, wildlife and man himself[1]. Future generations are unlikely to condone our lack of prudent concern for the integrity of the natural world that supports all life[2]. There is still very limited awareness of the nature of the threat[1]. This is an era of specialists, each of whom sees his own problem and is unaware of or intolerant of the larger frame into which it fits[2]. It is also an era dominated by industry, in which the right to make a dollar at whatever cost is seldom challenged[3]. When the public protests, confronted with some obvious evidence of damaging results of pesticide applications, it is fed little tranquilizing pills of half truth[4]. We urgently need an end to these false assurances, to the sugar coating of unpalatable facts[5]. It is the public that is being asked to assume the risks that the insect controllers calculate[6]. The public must decide whether it wishes to continue on the present road, and it can do so only when in full possession of the facts[7]. 3．我的译文

4．对比报告

通过将自己翻译的译文与参考译文进行对比，发现了自己的译文存在很多不足，现主要从(1)四字词组的使用 (2)句式结构的调整(3)转换法的应用(4)引申法的应用四个方面进行分析说明。

(1) 四字词组的使用

原译文中共有5处使用了四字词组，而我的译文中并未用到四字词组，四字词组的使用能够使译文言简意赅，整齐匀称，更使得译文的节奏感增强。例如第一段第二句中的“indiscriminately”我译为了“任意的”，而原译文译为了“不加区别”，第一段第四句中的“considerable wisdom and foresight”我译为了“相当大的智慧与远见”，原文译为了“远见卓识”，虽然我的译文也基本表达了原文的含义，但相比原译文不够简洁，逊色很多。因此，在今后翻译过程中，应该注意四字词组的使用，为自己的译文增色。

(2) 句式结构的调整

在对比过程中我发现自己的译文中有多处句子拗口，不如原译文自然流畅。例如第一段的第二句“I do contend that we have put poisonous and biologically potent chemicals indiscriminately into the hands of persons largely or wholly ignorant of their potentials for harm”，原译文将该句译成两个句子，并且在翻译形容词短语“largely or wholly ignorant of their potentials for harm”时，增加“他们”作主语，形容词“ignorant”转译成动词“不了解”，整句译成“但我认为我们已把化学毒药不加区别地置于某些人的手中，他们不甚了解或者全然不了解这些化学毒药具有潜在的造成危害的能力。”我的译文却生硬的按照原文的结构进行了翻译，译为了“但我认为我们已把化学毒药不加区别地置于某些人的手中，他们不甚了解或者全然不了解这些化学毒药具有潜在的造成危害的能力。”显然原译文更符合中文的表达，并且原译文在翻译过程中进行了词性转换及增译，使得译文语意更加通顺。

又如第二段的第二句，“Future generations are unlikely to condone our lack of prudent concern for the integrity of the natural world that supports all life”原译文使用了増译法，根据语意将原文后半句译为一个条件句，而我的译文却直接按原文的句式结构翻译，虽然意思基本表达清楚，但未考虑到语言差异，对句子进行结构的调整。同样的问题还有第一段第二句、第三段第一句、第三段第三句、第三段第七句。

因此，在今后翻译过程中，翻译完的句子一定要再看一下它是否符合中文的表达习惯，适当的进行结构的调整，使得译文更加的通顺流畅。

(3) 词类转换法的应用

在对比中发现虽然我的译文中也有几处使用到了词类转换，但不如原文通顺的原因还有词类转换用的不够娴熟，例如，我的译文中第一段第三句中，“without their knowledge”中的“knowledge” 转译为了动词“了解”，原译文也转译为了动词“知道”。

原文中大量使用了词类转换法，例如，第二段第一句“I contend, furthermore, that we have allowed these chemicals to be used with little or no advance investigation of their effect on soil, water, wildlife and man himself”，将介词短语“with little or no advance investigation of their effect on soil, water, wildlife and man himself”转换为动词，译为“却并未调查或很少调查它们对土壤、水、野生动物和人类本身有什么影响”，又如第二段第二句中，原译文将“ lack of prudent concern for”中的“concern”转译为动词，译为“不认真的关心”，而我译为了名词“缺少周全的考虑”。

通过词类转换的对比，我发现了在准确理解原文含义的基础上，灵活运用词类转换会使得译文更加得体大方。

(4) 引申法的应用

在这一点上值得可喜的是，虽然没有原译文中使用的多，我的译文也运用了引申法，例如第三段第三句“It is also an era dominated by industry, in which the right to make a dollar at whatever cost is seldom challenged”中的“challenge”我引申为了“质疑”，原译文引申为了“过问”。又如第三段第四句中的“it is fed little tranquilizing pills of half truth”我根据上下文引申为了“就会给他们吃一些能够使他们镇定下来的小药丸”，原译文也进行了引申，译为“就给他们吃一些用半真半假的话制作的小药丸，使他们镇静下来”。再如第三段第六句“It is the public that is being asked to assume the risks that the insect controllers calculate”中的 “calculate”我引申为了“造成”，原译文引申为了“设置”。

从整体来说，我的译文大体表达了原文的意思，但是明显不如原译文翻译的通顺流畅，因此在今后的翻译中需要注意中外文化差异，适当进行结构调整，运用课上学到的翻译方法，争取使自己的翻译取得进步。
