The Dragon Boat Festival, falling on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, is a traditional holiday celebrated in China. It is possibly the oldest, dating back to the Warring States Period in 227 B.C. The festival commemorates Qu Yuan, a minister in the service of the Chu Emperor. Despairing over corruption at court, Qu threw himself into a river. Townspeople jumped into their boats and tried in vain to save him. Then, hoping to distract hungry fish from his body, the people scattered rice on the water.

Many traditions and customs are held on the Dragon Boat Festival. The most popular dish during Dragon Boat Festival is zongzi, a dumpling made of glutinous rice and wrapped in bamboo or read leaves. It has various shapes and fillings. Besides, the festival is also a time for protection from evil and disease for the rest of the year.

People traditionally hang herbs on the front door, drink realgar wine and paste up pictures of Zhong Kui (a mythic guardian figure).

There is no doubt that Dragon boat racing is an indispensable part of the festival, held all over the country. As the gun is fired, people will see racers in dragon-shaped canoes pulling the oars harmoniously and hurriedly, accompanied by rapid drums, speeding toward their destination.
